(1) Answer the following questions in one sentence each:
(i) What was the prediction of an astrologer about Velan?
Ans. The astrologer predicted that Velan will live in a three storeyed building surrounded by a big garden.
(ii) Why did Velan leave home?
Ans. The immediate cause of Velan's leaving his father's house was a slap which his father gave to Velan one day on being late. So when Velan was only eighteen years old he left his home.
(iii) Where did Velan arrive after starving for a couple of days?
Ans. After starving for a couple of days, Velan arrived at the town of Malgudi.
(iv) What work was assigned to Velan by the old man?
Ans. Velan was assigned the work of a gardener and his duty was to wipe out the weeds and unwanted plants and vegetation.
(v) Name some of the summer flowers that grew in the garden.
Ans. Velan grew the flowers of Hibiscus, Chrysanthemum. Jasmine, roses and canna in the front part of the Kumar Baugh.
(vi) Why was Velan proud of his position?
Ans. Velan became the chief gardener when the man who brought him to work fell ill. So he was proud of his position.
(vii) What was the state of house after a few years?
Ans. After a few years, the house acquired mellowness in its appearance.
(vill) What did Velan ask the tree cutters in the end?
Ans. Velan screamed from a distance, ‘Don't cut yet. I am still within a hearing distance. Please wait till I am gone farther’.
(2) Answer the following questions in about hundred words:
(a) Describe the status of Velan's family in the village.
गाँव में बेलन के परिवार की सामाजिक स्थिति का वर्णन कीजिये।
Ans. Velan was born in the ragged and godforsaken family of Koppal. Narayan has introduced Koppal as a closeby village of Malgudi. Velan's father had mortgaged everything of his property and so the whole family had to work on the fields of others. The income of Velan's father was hardly some annas a week.
उत्तर — वेलन का जन्म कोप्पल के चीर-फाड़ वाले और ईश्वरविहीन परिवार में हुआ था। नारायण ने कोप्पल को मालगुडी के नजदीकी गांव के रूप में पेश किया है। वेलन के पिता ने अपनी सारी संपत्ति गिरवी रख दी थी और इसलिए पूरे परिवार को दूसरों के खेतों में काम करना पड़ा। वेलन के पिता की आय सप्ताह में मुश्किल से कुछ आने वाली थी।
(b) What work did Velan do after being employed by the old man?
वृद्ध व्यक्ति द्वारा नियुक्त किये जाने के पश्चात् बेलन को क्या कार्य करना पड़ता था?
Ans. Velan arrived at the town of Malgudi. His main business as a gardener was to wipe out the weeds and unwanted plants and vegetation. He uprooted the unwanted plants and vegetation by his hands and thus cleared the ground. Velan grow the flowers of Hibiscus, Chrysanthemum.

उत्तर — वेलन मालगुडी शहर पहुंचे। माली के रूप में उनका मुख्य व्यवसाय मातम और अवांछित पौधों और वनस्पतियों को मिटा देना था। उसने अपने हाथों से अवांछित पौधों और वनस्पतियों को उखाड़ दिया और इस तरह जमीन को साफ कर दिया। वेलन हिबिस्कस, गुलदाउदी के फूल उगाते हैं। कुमार बाग़ के अग्र भाग में चमेली, गुलाब और कैना।
(c) What kind of garden did Velan present to his master and his family?
बेलन ने अपने मालिक तथा उसके परिवार के समक्ष किस प्रकार का बगीचा प्रस्तुत किया?
Ans. After started working as a gardener Velan worked industriously, clearing acres of weed, marking out an extensive garden and then planting the seeds. By the time the house came up and Velan, as the chief gardener, presented a big and beautiful garden to his master and his family.
उत्तर — एक माली के रूप में काम करना शुरू करने के बाद वेलन ने कड़ी मेहनत की, एक एकड़ खरपतवार को साफ किया, एक विस्तृत बगीचे को चिह्नित किया और फिर बीज बोए। जब तक घर आया और मुख्य माली के रूप में वेलन ने अपने मालिक और उसके परिवार को एक बड़ा और सुंदर बगीचा भेंट किया।
(d) What thoughts came to his mind when Velan compared his present place with his village?
अपने वर्तमान स्थान से अपने गाँव की तुलना करते समय वेतन के मन में क्या विचार आये?
Ans. Velan thought that such a grand building could only be in the heaven. Velan thought that the dining room of the mansion was so big" that all the men of his village could have been accommodated there.
उत्तर — वेलन ने सोचा कि इतनी भव्य इमारत स्वर्ग में ही हो सकती है। वेलन ने सोचा कि हवेली का भोजन कक्ष इतना बड़ा है" कि उसके गाँव के सभी पुरुषों को वहाँ ठहराया जा सकता था।
(e) What is the importance of 'margosa tree' in the story?
प्रस्तुत कहानी में नीम के वृक्ष का क्या महत्व बताया गया है?
Ans. 'Margosa' tree had been planted years ago by Velan and he after it as his own child. When the house was sold to a builder, the builder's assistant thought the building as an ordinary one because he had made many other grand and costly buildings in the past. When the margosa tree grew large, the house behind it acquired mellowness in its appearance. The workers began to cut down this tree, Velan requested them not to do so as long as he was there. Once he had left and couldn't hear the sound of the axe they might resume with their work. The storyends with Velan screaming from a distance- 'Don't cut it yet. I am still within a hearing distance. Please wait till I am gone farther."
उत्तर — 'मार्गोसा' का पेड़ सालों पहले वेलन ने लगाया था और इसके बाद उन्होंने अपने बच्चे की तरह इसे लगाया। जब मकान किसी बिल्डर को बेचा गया तो बिल्डर के सहायक ने इमारत को सामान्य समझा क्योंकि उसने अतीत में कई अन्य भव्य और महंगी इमारतें बनाई थीं। जब मार्गोसा का पेड़ बड़ा हो गया, तो उसके पीछे के घर ने अपनी उपस्थिति में मधुरता प्राप्त कर ली। मजदूरों ने इस पेड़ को काटना शुरू कर दिया, वेलन ने उनसे अनुरोध किया कि जब तक वह वहां है तब तक ऐसा न करें। एक बार जब वह चला गया और कुल्हाड़ी की आवाज नहीं सुन सका तो वे अपने काम पर फिर से शुरू हो सकते थे। कहानी का अंत वेलन के दूर से चिल्लाते हुए होता है- 'अभी मत काटो। मैं अभी भी सुनने की दूरी के भीतर हूं। कृपया तब तक प्रतीक्षा करें जब तक मैं और आगे नहीं बढ़ जाता।"
(f) What message does Narayan convey through his story?
प्रस्तुत कहानी के माध्यम से नारायण क्या संदेश देना चाहते हैं?
Ans. Narayan's story which puts forward a strong case for forest conservation, is also a very subtle observations on what may withstand the force of time. While the man-made wonder (the house of the owners) loses all of its beauty, allure against the force of time, the only thing enduring it growing stronger and bigger is the garden which has turned into a shelter for thousands of birds. Narayan has probably answered a very big question to which many have tried finding a solution to. The title The Axe' is important as towards the end of the story the axe represents not only the economic progress' but also our own death knell.
उत्तर — नारायण की कहानी जो वन संरक्षण के लिए एक मजबूत मामला सामने रखती है, वह भी एक बहुत ही सूक्ष्म अवलोकन है जो समय की ताकत का सामना कर सकता है। जबकि मानव निर्मित आश्चर्य (मालिकों का घर) अपनी सारी सुंदरता खो देता है, समय की ताकत के खिलाफ आकर्षण, केवल एक चीज जो इसे मजबूत और बड़ा हो रही है वह उद्यान है जो हजारों पक्षियों के आश्रय में बदल गया है। नारायण ने शायद एक बहुत बड़े सवाल का जवाब दिया है, जिसका कई लोगों ने हल खोजने की कोशिश की है। शीर्षक कुल्हाड़ी महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि कहानी के अंत में कुल्हाड़ी न केवल आर्थिक प्रगति का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है, बल्कि हमारी खुद की मौत की घंटी भी है।
